Dead Space 1 and 2 Branded ‘Too Scary’

Turn your minds back to slowly walking through Dead Space 1/2, waiting and wondering when the next necromorph was going to come from and scare the living daylights out of you. Thinking that this is what a survival horror game should be like, tense, amazing atmosphere and even possibly feeling a little scared…

Well, not anymore. EA decided to conduct some research into Dead Space 1 and 2 and concluded that DS 1 and 2 were too scary for people, which led to the decision to include the co-op into Dead Space 3. This has upset a rather large percentage of the fan base, but this move is a response to the results from the research they did. It doesn’t make any sense.

EA Marketing Head, Laura Miele:

“We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers. We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the scares and tense moments are gone for good. She even stated:

“The horror of Dead Space is still all there. It’s still true to its roots and no less scary, but people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than they did doing it on their own. Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

Visceral have explained that the core of Dead Space 3 will still be centered around the solo campaign, but there will be a drop-in/drop-out co-op option for the fans that are too frightened to play alone (anyone? No? Didn’t think so) Or of course, those people who would like to play DS with a friend. Hopefully this won’t leave us with the AI aimlessly following us around, getting in the way and just generally being annoying (AKA Sheva on Resident Evil 5). Considering that the multiplayer from DS2 isn’t making a return in DS3 I think that they are being brave including another multiplayer mode to the series. Yes it’s a different mode, but I still stick to the fact that Dead Space is a single player experience.

Dead Space 3 is out in 2013.
